Let’s Start Over!
In the beginning … ahhh those famous first words recorded in the book of Genesis. Beginnings so often start with a sense of great hope and wonderment. This was the fresh starts of all fresh starts. A blank canvas with limitless possibilities. Girlfriends, don’t you just love a fresh start? A chance to begin anew with no past mistakes. There are times when we just need to start over.
Spiritually speaking, a new beginning is found in the book of John. That new beginning is found in putting our faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The apostle Paul spoke of this transforming faith in the book of Titus. he said, “… a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time …” Acknowledging that a new life is only possible through Jesus Christ is the only way to have a fresh start. In fact, Jesus said to a man named Nicodemus, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” Born again—let’s start over! If you already have a relationship with Jesus Christ then you surely know what a wonderful feeling it is to be able to “wipe the slate clean” and start over. King David came to a place in his life when he desperately needed to start over. Troubles surrounded him due to his disintegration into a sinful life. The enemy of his soul had enticed him to indulge in lustfully gazing upon a beautiful woman named Bathsheba. This led to sleeping with her apart from marriage as set forth in the Word of God. Once it becomes known to him that Bathsheba is pregnant, we see the actions of a desperate man. So panicked by his circumstances that he engaged in a murderous plot to kill Bathsheba’s husband, Uriah. If ever a person needed to start over it was King David.
The good news is David repented and turned his heart back to the Lord. David’s fresh start resulted in the Lord speaking these kind words about him after his departure from this world, “… walk before Me as your father David walked, in integrity of heart and in uprightness …”
King David whose life was ravaged by his sinful choices, but who got a fresh start from the heavenly Father, has been memorialized by the Jewish historian, Flavius Josephus. He wrote, “David was truly a man after God’s own heart.”
This is an encouraging story when we reach a point in our life where we need a new beginning. If that is where you are today, then praying the very words King David prayed after he repented are appropriate. In the book of Psalms David wrote, “Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.”
Near the end of Lamentations, a book of poetry written to lament the destruction of Jerusalem, the prophet Jeremiah makes a plea to the Lord. He says, “Bring us back to you! Give us a fresh start.” What a wonderful way to cry out to the Lord when we have a remorseful heart and want to start over!
Dearest girlfriends, let us turn our hearts towards our heavenly Father and receive a new beginning.
The Day the Laughter Died
Some would say that April 26, 1989 is the day the laughter died. That is the day that the greatest comedienne of all time died. Lucille Ball who spent her life bringing laughter to millions was silenced. My dearest friend Cyndee and I have spent numerous hours laughing while watching I Love Lucy. Who could resist laughing as Lucy and Ethel frantically gobble handfuls of chocolate candy to hide their failure on their new job venture. What about that hilarious expression on Lucy’s face when her boss says, “Speed it up a little!”? But alas, our lives are not always filled with laughter. Life has a way of turning laughter into mourning.
The Bible gives us many examples of times the laughter died. One such was when Sarah had given birth to Isaac. On this joyous day she said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” Interestingly the name Isaac is Yitschaq in Hebrew which means “he laughs”. Yet, there would come a day when Sarah would find herself not laughing. A great feast was held when Isaac was weaned. The truth is Sarah’s distress on this particular day was the result of sin. Sarah had refused to wait on the promise of God to have a child and took matters into her own hands. Subsequently Hagar gave birth to Abraham’s first son, Ishmael. At the feast, Sarah observed Ishmael mocking her son Isaac. Like any mother, this upset her.
Girlfriends, has your laughter died? There are many reasons we find ourselves not laughing. One is quite simply sin. If this is why your laughter has ceased, then immediate repentance will bring joy to your heart and times of laughter to return.
Another reason is that our heavenly Father allows difficulties to come into our life in order for His greater purposes to be accomplished. Such is the case of the many hardships Joseph had to endure in the book of Genesis. If this is the reason you have no laughter, then accepting God’s greater plan for your life will bring you joy. Last year in the short span of a week I had three friends lose their husbands. All these ladies have accepted Jesus Christ into their lives and have the comfort only He can provide. However, understandably this was a period in their lives with very little laughter.
The enemy of your soul also wants to steal your laughter. Sometimes he will even convince you of a lie. For instance, “God is not going to bring you through a difficult time.” The only way to prevent Satan from absconding with your laughter is shielding yourself with the Word. The book of Ephesians tells us to take up the shield of faith, with which we can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. The word faith in the original Greek is pistis which means conviction of the truth. The way to have conviction of the truth is to immerse yourself in the Word of God.
Dearest girlfriends, I pray we would allow the laughter to return to our hearts and enjoy the life God has chosen for us.
A Cute New Outfit
There is nothing like a cute new outfit to cheer a girl up. In the book of Genesis we see a story of an entire household putting on new clothes and oh what a difference it made. The patriarch Jacob, told his family and all who were with them to, “… purify yourselves and change your clothes.” As much fun as a new outfit is, the emphasis here is really on purifying their hearts. They got rid of all their idols and returned to God.
Girlfriends, are you at a place in your life where you need to put on a “new outfit” for your Lord? It is so much more refreshing to have a change of heart than to put on the most exquisite clothing you can imagine. Because we are all susceptible to sin, we must constantly look in the full length mirror and examine what we are “wearing”. My favorite Scripture was written by King David when he desperately needed to purify his heart. He said, “Create in me a pure heart, O God …”
Dearest girlfriends, I pray we would put on “cute new outfits” by praying the words of the psalmist, “Create in me a pure heart, O God.”
… purify yourselves and change your clothes. ~ Genesis 35:2 NIV
Create in me a pure heart, O God … ~ Psalm 51:10 NIV
Is Sin Crouching at Your Door?
Is opportunity knocking at your door? In the book of Genesis, Cain found opportunity knocking at his door. Unfortunately this opportunity came in the form of sin.
Cain’s opportunity to sin presented itself because he did not do what was right. That may be putting it mildly. In fact, his jealousy over his brother’s offerings to the Lord gave birth to murder. This was actually the world’s first murder. So sad and painful to watch this story unfold. In between Cain’s jealousy and his becoming a murderer, we see a warning from the Lord. The Lord told him, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.” If only Cain had heeded that warning! How different his life and those around him would have turned out. It has been said that the loss of a child is the most painful death one can experience. Girlfriends, I cannot read this story and not be moved by the agony Cain’s mother Eve experienced. One son killed her other son … a dreaded double loss.
And all this happened because evil desire gave birth to sin. Are you and I any different? Sorry to say—no! Our evil desires may look different, but sin is sin. Girlfriends, you and I have much more power to overcome sin that we sometimes realize. In the words of the apostle Peter, “… he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” The key here is to fill ourselves with His great and precious promises. Immerse yourself into the Word of God and allow it’s power to take away your evil desires.
By the way, Peter certainly knew a thing or two about sin. Remember it was he who denied Christ three times even after Christ Himself warned him what would happen. There is great hope even in our sin, God’s great mercy is amazing. Peter failed more than once and yet went on to live a committed life to his Lord and Savior. In the case of Cain, after God confronted him about his sin, He also told him He would protect him. Now girlfriends, that is pure love!
Dearest girlfriends, let us examine our hearts for evil desires and do what is right and not allow them to give birth to sin.
Wherever I Go …
There once was a man named Jacob who had total assurance that God was his constant companion throughout his life. Sounds so comforting to think of his thoughts recorded in the book of Genesis, “… God, who answered me in the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone.” God had assured him earlier in his life that, “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go …”
The psalmist also proclaimed great hope that the Lord would never abandon him. Girlfriends, rejoice in the fact we have that same hope. Whatever you may be dealing with in your life today, rest assured God is with you at all times and will never leave your side.
Dearest girlfriends, let us be strong and courageous allowing the words of God to comfort us in knowing He is with us wherever we go.
An Angelic Treasure Hunt
Girlfriends, an angelic treasure hunt sounds fun doesn’t it? I am not talking about searching for angels. I am referring to a beautiful story found in the book of Genesis. Abraham was old and wanted to find a proper wife for his son. He sent his chief servant on a treasure hunt and told him, “The LORD, the God of heaven, … will send his angel before you so that you can get a wife for my son from there.” Girlfriends, that is a breathtaking romantic story! We should all believe in God’s divine guidance when we seek to choose a spouse. My eldest son actually fasted and prayed for the beautiful lady he believed God had chosen for him. After a persistent romantic pursuit, (He inherited his father’s romantic gene!), she said yes, and they are now blissfully married!
But this story has far more to do about a principle of our heavenly Father rather than about romance. It shows the wonderful guidance He wants to send us as we seek the treasures He wants to give us. In this story, His provision came through seeking, prayer, and angelic intervention.
Dearest girlfriends, are there treasures you are seeking from your heavenly Father today? If so, pray and believe Him to provide divine guidance.
Abraham was now old and well advanced in years, and the LORD had blessed him in every way. He said to the chief servant in his household, the one in charge of all that he had, “… I want you to swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will … go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac.” The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the country you came from?” “Make sure that you do not take my son back there,” Abraham said. “The LORD, the God of heaven, who brought me out of my father’s household and my native land and who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give this land’—he will send his angel before you so that you can get a wife for my son from there. ~ Genesis 24:1-7 NIV
Then he prayed, “O LORD, God of my master Abraham, give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. May it be that when I say to a girl, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too’—let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.” Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah, who was the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor. The girl was very beautiful, a virgin; no man had ever lain with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again. The servant hurried to meet her and said, “Please give me a little water from your jar.” “Drink, my lord,” she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink. After she had given him a drink, she said, “I’ll draw water for your camels too, until they have finished drinking.” So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, ran back to the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all his camels. Without saying a word, the man watched her closely to learn whether or not the LORD had made his journey successful. ~ Genesis 24:12-21 NIV
Then the man bowed down and worshiped the LORD, saying, “Praise be to the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness to my master. As for me, the LORD has led me on the journey to the house of my master’s relatives.” ~ Genesis 24:26-27 NIV
