Are You a Tutti Frutti Lady?

Jan 14

by Victoria Robinson

When we think of a fruity lady, we usually think of the ladies who are “interesting” and most people wish to avoid. Yet there was a very famous “fruity” lady who most people would have  never avoided. Her name was Carmen Miranda and she cornered the market as being known as a fruity lady. She is best known for her role in the 1943 Busby Berkeley movie, The Gang’s All Here, in which she sang “The Lady in the Tutti Frutti Hat” while adorned with a seemingly gargantuan piece of fruit-laden headgear. The spunky Miranda with her distinctive fruity hats was very popular in the movies from the 1930’s to the 1950’s. Even if you have never seen the movie, you are most certainly familiar with the Chiquita Banana advertisements with a woman in a over-the-top banana headdress.

The Word of God is full of “fruity” ladies. Lydia, Phoebe, Priscilla, Mary,  Tryphena, Tryphosa, and Persis, to mention a few. The apostle Paul commended all these ladies in his letters and one could conclude they were all showing the fruit of righteousness and fruit of the Spirit. To be a “tutti frutti” lady does not require a fruit filled hat, but does require a fruit of the Spirit filled heart. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Dearest girlfriends, let us become “tutti frutti” ladies filled with the fruit of the Spirit.

… We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. One of those listening was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message. When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us. ~ Acts 16:13-15 NIV

I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church in Cenchrea. I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been a great help to many people, including me. ~ Romans 16:1-2 NIV

Greet Priscilla … my fellow workers in Christ Jesus. They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them. … Greet Mary, who worked very hard for you. … Greet Tryphena and Tryphosa, those women who work hard in the Lord. Greet my dear friend Persis, another woman who has worked very hard in the Lord. ~ Romans 16:3-4,6,12 NIV

By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. ~ Matthew 7:16-20 NIV

Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.” ~ Luke 3:8-9 NIV

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. … Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. ~ Galatians 5:22-23,25 NIV

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. ~ Ephesians 5:8-11 NIV

And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God. ~ Philippians 1:9-11 NIV

For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. ~ Colossians 1:9-12 NIV

But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. ~ James 3:17 NIV
