What’s Lurking in the Shadows of Your Life?

Aug 22

Shadows can be either beautiful or scary. I get great enjoyment when the trees bring shadows into the windows of my home. When the season changes to autumn I love the rustling of the trees in the wind and the dappling of light as it shifts and sways. For some reason this brings comfort to my heart. However, I do not want my heavenly Father to possess the same qualities. That would be terrifying! Not knowing when the shadows would move and what in the world could be lurking in them.

Fortunately, the Word of God shows us that our heavenly Father does not change like shifting shadows. The apostle James describes God as, “the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” Our heavenly Father is totally trustworthy. In fact, in the book of Hebrews we read the wonderful words, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Just like the shadow of trees brings me comfort, knowing that our Lord never changes gives me even greater comfort.

Girlfriends, what shadows are lurking in your life? Is it the regret of your past? The stress of your present life? The fear of your future? If you are dealing with any of these dreaded shadows, then you need to embrace the comfort of your heavenly Father found in His unchanging Word. The Word of God is soothing to our hearts in times of distress. It does not shift or change like a shadow. The apostle Peter wrote a beautiful quote from the book of Isaiah, “All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands forever.”

Dearest girlfriends, when we see shifting shadows in our life, lets us place our trust in the unchanging truth of our heavenly Father.

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. ~ James 1:17 NIV

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. ~ Hebrews 13:8 NKJV

For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. For, “All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands forever.” … ~ 1 Peter 1:23-25 NIV

Heavenly Lights

There are some interesting comparisons between the sun, moon, and stars which provide earthly light for us all and the eternal light of Jesus Christ. The sun, moon, and stars are a great reminder of the attributes of our Lord and Savior.

  • Without them we would not realize what darkness really is …

In Genesis we read, “God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness.”

Jesus was the fulfillment of the prophecy spoken by Isaiah, “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.”

  • They are both good …

After God placed the sun, moon, and stars we read, “And God saw that it was good.”

The apostle James said, “Whatever is good and perfect comes to us from God above, who created all heaven’s lights. … In his goodness he chose to make us his own children by giving us his true word.” The true word here is Jesus Christ, for through Him we can become children of God.

  • They both govern …

We see in Genesis, “God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night …”

The psalmist tells us, “He will judge the world in righteousness; he will govern the peoples with justice.”

  • They both are worshipped …

While it is incorrect, people who practice astrology are worshipping the stars as it says in Isaiah, “All the counsel you have received has only worn you out! Let your astrologers come forward, those stargazers who make predictions month by month, let them save you from what is coming upon you.”

The correct worship is Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God as recorded in Revelation, “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!”

Jesus Christ is the Morning Star who brings eternal light into our hearts. Dearest girlfriends, I pray we would allow His light shine in our hearts as a testimony to a lost and dying world.

God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. ~ Genesis 1:16-18 NIV

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned. ~ Isaiah 9:2 NIV

But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel. ~ Matthew 2:6 NIV

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” ~ John 8:12 NIV

Whatever is good and perfect comes to us from God above, who created all heaven’s lights. … In his goodness he chose to make us his own children by giving us his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his choice possession. ~ James 1:17-18 NLT

The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. ~ Revelation 21:23-25 NIV

The LORD reigns forever; he has established his throne for judgment. He will judge the world in righteousness; he will govern the peoples with justice. ~ Psalm 9:7-8 NIV

Give thanks to the Lord of lords … who made the great lights— His love endures forever. the sun to govern the day, His love endures forever. the moon and stars to govern the night; His love endures forever. ~ Psalm 136:3,7-9 NIV

Praise him, sun and moon, praise him, all you shining stars. ~ Psalm 148:3 NIV

“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.” ~ Revelation 22:16 NIV

All the counsel you have received has only worn you out! Let your astrologers come forward, those stargazers who make predictions month by month, let them save you from what is coming upon you. Surely they are like stubble; the fire will burn them up. They cannot even save themselves from the power of the flame. … Each of them goes on in his error; there is not one that can save you … ~ Isaiah 47:13-15 NIV

“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!” ~ Revelation 5:12 NIV
