A Cute New Outfit

Feb 05

by Victoria Robinson

There is nothing like a cute new outfit to cheer a girl up. In the book of Genesis we see a story of an entire household putting on new clothes and oh what a difference it made. The patriarch Jacob, told his family and all who were with them to, “… purify yourselves and change your clothes.” As much fun as a new outfit is, the emphasis here is really on purifying their hearts. They got rid of all their idols and returned to God.

Girlfriends, are you at a place in your life where you need to put on a “new outfit” for your Lord? It is so much more refreshing to have a change of heart than to put on the most exquisite clothing you can imagine.  Because we are all susceptible to sin, we must constantly look in the full length mirror and examine what we are “wearing”. My favorite Scripture was written by King David when he desperately needed to purify his heart. He said, “Create in me a pure heart, O God …”

Dearest girlfriends, I pray we would put on “cute new outfits” by praying the words of the psalmist, “Create in me a pure heart, O God.”

… purify yourselves and change your clothes. ~ Genesis 35:2 NIV

Create in me a pure heart, O God … ~ Psalm 51:10 NIV

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. ~ James 4:7-10 NIV

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. ~ 1 John 1:8-10 NIV

“Therefore come out from them and be separate,  says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.” “I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God. ~2 Corinthians 6:17-18,7:1 NIV
