The Big Guy Upstairs?

Nov 27

by Victoria Robinson

Hallelujah! What a beautiful word that has a glorious connotation. Who knew it is really a slang word of sorts. (Well, not really, but work with me here.) It is Hebrew for “praise Yah” (shortened form of Yahweh). It is not uncommon slang for our Lord to be called “the big guy upstairs”. Can’t you just hear someone who uses that term say, “Praise ya big guy upstairs!”  For the rest of us that would translate as,  “Praise ye the Lord.” Girlfriends, please understand I have the utmost reverence and holy fear of our heavenly Father, but there certainly are people who think of the Lord as, “the big guy upstairs”.

There are a multitude of reasons we should praise our Lord. One compelling reason is that an entire Psalm was devoted to commanding us to praise ye the Lord. Consider also the fact that dreariness of heart is detrimental to our emotional state of being and it is a wonderful remedy to have a heart that is constantly singing, “Praise ye the Lord!” Occupying our hearts with magnificent thoughts such as Hallelujah is one way to guard off the enemy, not to mention a great way to practice our praise that will last all eternity. Heaven is going to be a place beyond our wildest imaginations where we will worship our heavenly Father. Sounds so fabulous doesn’t it girlfriends?

Dearest girlfriends, may the praise of hallelujah be in our hearts and on our lips as we worship our heavenly Father.

Then a voice came from the throne, saying: “Praise our God, all you his servants, you who fear him, both small and great!” Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: “Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! … ~ Revelation 19:5-7 NIV

O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people. For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD. ~ Psalm 117:1-2 KJV

Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.  Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.  Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.  Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals. Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD. ~ Psalm 150:1-6 KJV
